Natural catastrophes and man-made disasters cost insurers $26bn in 2009, according to Swiss Re’s latest sigma study. The overall cost to society was $62bn.

Natural catastrophes and man-made disasters cost insurers $26bn in 2009, according to Swiss Re’s latest sigma study. The overall cost to society was $62bn.

On a worldwide basis, natural catastrophes cost insurers $22bn in 2009, while man-made disasters cost an additional $4bn. Insured losses were highest in North America, where they cost insurers more than $12.7bn.
